Opening reception of Mirada Fine Art's 'CALM in the STORM' |
Where do you feel most at ease? For many in Colorado, ‘getting
away from it all’ involves taking in the breathtaking beauty surrounding
us. To others, curling up by a
fire and immersing themselves in a good book helps restore balance. Or perhaps enjoying a glass of wine, surrounded
by friends offers a respite.

Tensions
throughout the year have escalated our stress levels. Art can serve as an effective release valve, allowing
viewers to lose themselves within a scene. In a unique collaborative exhibit entitled ‘Calm in the Storm,’
Mirada Fine Art presents new works by the gallery’s artists that portray what
brings them serenity within a chaotic world. An opening reception was held March 31st (despite a literal storm outside) and the exhibition will run through April 30th.

Gallery owner,
Steve Sonnen, specifically requested pieces from his core group of artists for
the exhibit that would visually provide a sense of well-being. “It’s been a tumultuous year, and I
think many people are seeking relief,” explains Sonnen. To that end, the gallery will present
an impressive array of peaceful impressionist landscapes, lush abstract
canvases, and striking, flowing sculpture.

Located in the
foothills just west of Denver, the gallery is housed in an historic log
building, chosen specifically for its character, ambiance and incredible
backdrop for contemporary art. A quick and easy getaway from the city, the
gallery itself lends an additional layer of tranquility to the exhibit.

Many Mirada artists find solace in the earth. Australian artist
Jennyfer Stratman sculpted a life-size multi-piece aspen wall sculpture,
explaining, “We may grow on different branches, but we are all connected to the
same root stock.” Local artist
Melanie Warsinske concurs. “I draw serenity from a walk in the woods, studying
cloud formations, watching the drift of falling snow, and recapture that in the
calm of my studio, instilling the essence on canvas.”

Connectivity is another recurring theme. “Gravity’s weight
makes me feel as though two hands support me. Calm envelops me as I then create with my two hands,
allowing no room for anger or stress,” states well-known artist Stephanie
Paige. Her richly-hued multi-media
paintings reflect this Zen-like perspective. Texas artist Cynthia Chartiér
believes we control the way we feel.
She focuses on prisms of vibrant color, which led to her offering,
entitled “Through New Golden Eyes.”
