Arturo Mallmann, Svetlana Shalygina, 8354 MILES

Arturo Mallmann spent his childhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Svetlana Shalygina grew up in the small village of Efremov, Russia. Completely different cultures and 8354 miles separated these two aspiring artists, but their art represents how human nature ultimately drives people toward the same questions and desires. These remarkable artists are being paired up for the first time in a unique exhibition appropriately titled '8354 Miles.' This exhibition will be unveiled during an artist reception at Mirada Fine Art gallery on Friday, September 2nd, from 6-9pm. The exhibition will be on display from September 3rd through the 25th.

Arturo Mallmann grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. When he began to paint, his first motivation was to develop a space that presented no barriers for the eyes. Depth became critical to his artwork. Over many years, Arturo developed a technique that went beyond creating an illusion of depth...his pieces are transformed into a real three-dimensional space. This technique consists of innumerable layers of translucent acrylic colors applied between several coats of clear epoxy resin.

Arturo typically places human beings in his paintings very far away from the viewer, usually so close to the horizon that they frequently look on the verge of disappearing. "I do that not only to further increase the depth but also because I want those human beings to be surrounded by a vast, naked and mysterious universe that presents no distractions," states Arturo. "This is very different from the urban environment where most people spend their lives these days. Hopefully the environment in my paintings is more conducive to approach our deepest selves."

Svetlana Shalygina was born into a humble working class family in Efremov, Russia. She grew up close to nature in wide-open Russian countryside and picturesque valleys, which she sketched and painted throughout her childhood. At 20, her life took a dramatic turn when she seized a remarkable opportunity, and moved to the United States.

Svetlana's new life in the Land of Opportunity was difficult at first. She cleaned houses and washed dishes to make a living. Discouraged and lost, Svetlana came to realize that no matter how hard she worked, an expensive formal art education would not become a reality. Without a formal art education, Svetlana took a different route to success; self-study, experimentation, and the development of a unique creative path.

The foundation of Svetlana's unique style is the poetry and beauty she treasured as a child, and the love she still feels for her homeland. The core of her creative expression is both personal and nostalgic. Svetlana now lives and paints in Newport Beach, California. Happily, she now returns to her native soil each summer to visit family and friends. Her dramatic style has garnered her much attention, and she now has collectors from around the globe.

William Butler Yeats wrote, “I know that I shall meet my fate somewhere among the clouds above.” Although Yeats was referring to an Irish airman, the same can be said for the latest exhibition at Mirada Fine Arts Gallery, “in the CLOUDS.” In this innovative show, Mirada has combined the talents of two disparate artists to create a show that is full of color and whimsy, as well as those moments of emotional reflection that can be found in the clouds above.

 “in the CLOUDS” is a show that combines the work of contemporary Western and abstract painter Paul Cunningham and sculptor Allen Wynn.  “A few months back, I was moving one of Allen’s pieces around in the gallery. As I passed by one of Paul’s paintings, I realized that they work together in a wonderful way. There is an interesting juxtaposition between Paul’s abstract works and Allen’s whimsical grounded characters,” says Steve Sonnen, founder and director of Mirada.

 Sonnen approached the artists about a collaboration in the form of a two-man exhibition. Both got to work creating original pieces to include in the cooperative show. Many of the vignettes placed throughout the gallery feature Wynn’s whimsical bronze figures placed in front of Cunningham’s vivid abstract canvases. Although the placement creates a foreground/background scenario, both pieces contribute to each artistic statement. 

In one especially delightful display, Wynn created a serene young woman on a swing. Cunningham has created an equally eye-catching canvas filled with the rich colors of a sunset layered beneath stacks of cumulus clouds. The combination pulls the viewer into the scene — you can almost feel the last rays of sunshine as they reflect off the woman’s shoulders and hear the gentle breezes blowing through Cunningham’s landscape as Wynn’s swinger perches with her head in the clouds.

Cunningham, the two-dimensional artist behind these artistic sensory experiences, is a Colorado native who recently opened a studio in Evergreen. Cunningham, a self-taught artist, began his career painting carefully constructed Western portraits filled with painstaking detail and colorful backdrops.  As time passed, Cunningham’s vibrant backgrounds began to take center stage, and his career took a turn into the world of abstract art. It is these opulently hued canvases that have been so warmly received by Mirada’s patrons.

 Wynn is also a self-taught artist whose sculpting talents emerged in his home state of Ohio. A resident of Cincinnati, Wynn shows his work in Santa Fe, Boston, New Orleans and exclusively at Mirada in Colorado. According to Suzanne Deats, a Santa Fe arts writer, “Wynn’s archetypal sculptures call up personal associations from all who see them. These figures may represent any kind of person, anywhere in the world, because the artist has freed them from extraneous detail and has stated their meaning in the simplest terms. Allen Wynn has taken his impressions from earliest childhood memories through very recent experience and has interpreted them in a universal language.”

 This language, which echoes in Cunninghams’ work as well, is the language of human emotion. The universality of both artists’ work is what captures viewers — allowing each to find their own meaning in the artwork. One might say that it is this commonality which brought the work of these two distinct artists together. Others might say that Sonnen, upon passing Cunningham’s canvas with Wynn’s sculpture in hand, discovered fate among the clouds.

Last Friday night we had the sneak preview and opening reception of Laurie Justus Pace's exhibition 'Pareidolia.'  Laurie is an award-winning artist from Mt. Vernon, Texas and unfortunately she became ill last week and couldn't fly out for the opening.  In her place, Laurie's son and daughter-in law, Morgan and Kelly, came and talked to all those interested in Laurie's distinctive body of work.  Although we were obviously disappointed Laurie couldn't make it, all of our clients thoroughly enjoyed her spectacular new pieces.  Most of Laurie's work is created using a palette knife...and she makes it look so easy!  Below are just a few examples of the diverse works that make up 'Pareidolia.'  (By the way, the term Pareidolia is the phenomena of seeing animals in clouds or faces on the surface of the moon.  It is the same thing that happens when Laurie gazes at her thickly applied strokes of oil paint and begins to visualize equine forms.)

Sergey Cherep at Mirada Fine Art, 7.9.2011

Sergey Cherep was as Mirada Fine Art on Saturday and did what he does best...paint from the heart.  He amazed all the people who came to watch him at work...as he effortlessly finished off a spectacular 48" x 48" oil landscape.  The piece was sold as soon as he finished it.  Sergey also brought up some spectacular new pieces...definitely come by the gallery and see his new work!

Bonnie Teitelbaum's 'Internal Conversations' Opening Reception at Mirada Fine Art

We had a fantastic turnout for Bonnie Teitelbaum's opening reception of 'Internal Conversations' last Friday night.  If you weren't able to attend, we hope you'll come by and check out her stunning new work.  This exhibition runs through July 10th. We were absolutely thrilled when Western Art & Architecture magazine recognized artist Bonnie Teitelbaum as "One to Watch" in 2010.   She was also called 'a visionary artist' that same year in the book Acrylic Innovation. It only reinforced what Bonnie's collectors from around the globe already knew: her remarkable paintings are entirely enticing.

Bonnie hopes "Internal Conversations" will persuade viewers to do just that ­- step inside the paintings' sublime colors and textures and evoke personal reflection.  Bonnie is a master at using bold colors in a delicate manner.  She trusts her work will inspire the same peace in others that it does within her.  The images reflect her love of nature, and bring to mind personal feelings, friends, places and times.

Primarily using acrylic paint, Bonnie adds crackle pastes and mouldings to provide textural interest and depth.  The many layers of paint and pours of clear gel not only produce shimmering color, but also provide a path for light to travel through.  The effect is much like looking into a tidal pool.

Bonnie Teitelbaum has worked as a graphic artist, product designer and artistic welder, and has been a fine arts painter for over 25 years.  She grew up in an Air Force family and lived throughout the United States, as well as in Japan, Germany and the Philippines.  She currently resides in Santa Fe, NM. Although she has been recognized throughout the world, the only place her pieces can be viewed in Colorado is at Mirada Fine Art Gallery.
